Foley Legacy Foundation has expressed concern over the situation of American citizens imprisoned in Iran or barred from leaving the country, urging the U.S. government to prioritize their release in upcoming negotiations.
This foundation, an American non-profit organization established in memory of the slain journalist James Foley, works to counter hostage-taking and advocate for the freedom of nationals detained abroad. It actively tracks the status of American journalists and citizens imprisoned in countries, including Iran.
In its statement, the organization noted that it is deeply concerned that imprisoned Americans in Iran, or individuals who have been barred from leaving the country, may not have been addressed in the reported understanding between Tehran and Washington.
The foundation emphasized that while parts of the agreements and understandings between the two countries are dedicated to other issues, such as nuclear matters, with some topics deferred to future talks, the opportunity presented by the upcoming discussions must be utilized to address the situation of these individuals.
