The Thiruvananthapuram Judicial First Class Magistrate Court-III on Thursday rejected the bail plea of three Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] workers accused of attacking Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials and damaging vehicles during a raid at former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s residence in the city last month.Magistrate Tania Mariam Jose dismissed the bail petition filed by the three accused- sixth accused Kiran, eighth accused Shafiq, and seventeenth accused Vysakh. The same court had earlier dismissed the bail pleas of five other accused identified as Sreejith, Jithinraj, Manoj, Jeevan, and Shahin. In the bail application, the accused contended that the allegations against them were false and baseless. Further, the investigation in the case had been completed. The defence also informed the court that not all of the accused had any criminal antecedents and that they were willing to comply with any bail conditions imposed by the court. However, the prosecution opposed the bail pleas, arguing that the investigation was still in progress. The prosecution also argued that granting bail to the accused would send the wrong message to society and that bail should not be granted in serious offences where a prima facie case exists, particularly in cases that shock the public conscience.Accepting the prosecution’s contention, the court rejected the bail petitions. The police have invoked multiple charges against the accused, including murder attempt. The Museum police had registered a case against around 300 persons last month in connection with the case. The ED officials were attacked when they were returning after conducting searches at Mr. Vijayan’s residence in connection with a money-laundering case related to Cochin Minerals and Rutile Limited (CMRL), in which his daughter, Veena T., is facing investigation.
