A dog sustained injuries after a chain was tied around its neck. The dog was rescued by SAFE.

Animal rights activists are urging stricter legislation against animal cruelty because reports indicate a record number of abuse cases, while shelters struggle to cope with the influx.

Recently, shocking cases - including the assault of Nunu the pig in Phoenix; a bestiality case in Chatsworth, and news of an alleged drunk, armed man shooting a pregnant cow in Phoenix - indicated the horrific level of animal cruelty.

Kerry Janke, the director of Safe, an animal rights organisation that works to ensure the safety and well-being of Nunu, said the rise in severe animal abuse stems from a combination of deep‑rooted societal, legal, and behavioural factors.

“These include a lack of empathy, social media fame, weak legislation, poor enforcement of laws, and judicial reluctance. We are seeing a growing desensitisation to suffering, both human and animal. Violence has become normalised in many communities. Some offenders deliberately harm animals to film and share the abuse online for attention or shock value.
