The procurement price of eggs reached an all-time high of ₹6.45 per egg in Namakkal district and is expected to reach ₹7 in coming days. In retail, the price is anticipated to reach ₹9 soon.Namakkal, popularly known as the egg town, houses more than 1,600 poultry farms. Six to seven crore eggs are produced and sent to various parts of the State and to Karnataka, Kerala, and Puducherry, every day. Eggs are also sent to schools as part of the noon meal scheme in Tamil Nadu.The National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC) Namakkal zone fixes the price of the eggs, depending on the production and demand. In a significant milestone, in December 2025, the egg procurement price reached an all-time high of ₹6.40 in the district.Unfortunately, due to a fall in demand, the procurement price of eggs reduced. Notably, for the past few days, the procurement price of the eggs started to rise and on Wednesday evening (June 17, 2026), it was at ₹6.45, which is the all-time high in the history of Namakkal.Due to the price hike, the price of eggs crossed ₹7 in retail. In Chennai, an egg was sold at ₹8.25 in retail. Poultry owners anticipated that in the coming days, the retail price may touch ₹9 per egg.Speaking to the reporters, the Tamil Nadu Poultry Farmers Association (TNPFA) president K. Singaraj said the prices of eggs have increased due to the rise in demand across the country and due to an increase in fodder prices. He said that in the coming days, the egg procurement price will touch ₹7. “Due to the West Asian conflict, egg exports from Namakkal was reduced to 25 lakh eggs from one crore eggs,” said Mr. Singaraj, adding that 75 lakh eggs are being sent to the schools as part of the noon meal scheme.
