Another AI lab is exploring becoming an AI cloud service provider.France's Mistral AI could offer AI cloud services to customers, as well as its own LLMs.Co-founder and CEO Arthur Mensch revealed the plans in a LinkedIn post."Following our investment in compute infrastructure, we’re also proposing hosted AI cloud services (through Studio, that provides high QoS tokens managed agents). We offer a service tier that is completely decoupled from US service providers, because it matters. We have capacity online, it’s growing fast, and we can help secure it," he wrote.Mensch noted that the company has been focused on large enterprises thus far, and "haven't been great at helping developers and smaller structures," but that it is working on that."We’re building under the premise that AI technology is a commodity technology that every organization needs a secured and affordable supply of," he said. "States and organizations need to have sovereignty over that technology: they should own and control the systems that are specifically embedding their IP and tacit knowledge, and will end up running their most critical processes; they should benefit from efficient pricing, through AI systems that evolve to reduce costs and improve accuracy through human interaction."Mistral AI has previously stated that it hopes to control 200MW of compute capacity across Europe by the end of 2027. The company raised $830 million in debt financing to fund the purchase of GPUs for its planned data center outside Paris in March 2026, and has signed on for capacity from Digital Realty in the city.The plans come less than a month after US AI lab OpenAI launched an AI cloud-type offering. Called "OpenAI Guaranteed Capacity," the solution gives users "long-term access to OpenAI compute for the products, agents, and customer workflows that matter most."Similarly, OpenAI noted that its efforts to invest in infrastructure and capacity had enabled it to scale compute significantly, thus launching the offering. The company, however, has significantly more compute than Mistral AI, claiming to have surpassed its goal of 10GW of AI capacity ahead of schedule in May, though it should be noted that the 10GW is contracted capacity, rather than live capacity, with OpenAI only claiming to have ended 2025 with 1.9GW of compute capacity, according to CFO Sarah Friar.
