ALBAWABA - Following the UK's decision, the UAE announced that social media will be banned for children under 15 years old due to child safety concerns, as reported by AFP. The country has joined Australia and the UK in taking similar measures. According to WAM news agency, citing a cabinet resolution, "Children below this age are prohibited from creating, using, or operating personal accounts on social media platforms." The UAE's official X account shared an infographic explaining the decision's "Key Provisions" and wrote that the "UAE Cabinet Issues Resolution Regulating Children's Access to Social Media Platforms."Top key provisions include providing children between 15 and 16 with safe access to platforms with the addition of age-appropriate classification, restricted interaction, regulated usage time, and parental controls. It adds that even with parental consent, under-15s will be prohibited from accessing social media.Similar to other countries taking these measures, the UAE will also require platforms to "implement accurate and reliable age verification" methods for individuals of age.
