Editor’s note: This is the second story in a 10-part series looking at the most intriguing New England Patriots players ahead of training camp. We previously wrote on: Kyle WilliamsIf there were any positives to be taken out of the Patriots’ blowout Super Bowl loss to the Seattle Seahawks, the play of Christian Gonzalez was one of them. In his third NFL season, the top-end cornerback showed he’s a big-game player, too.His interception in the AFC Championship Game helped ice that contest and send the Pats to the Super Bowl. Gonzalez was dominant on Super Sunday, too, even as little went right around him.It capped another successful campaign for Gonzalez, despite playing three NFL seasons for three different coaches. And it sets Gonzalez up for a massive payday. He’s eligible for an extension with the Patriots, which sets the table for an interesting offseason and makes him one of the team’s most intriguing players entering training camp.Is Rhamondre Stevenson the best pass blocking RB in the NFL?Robert MaysHistoryGonzalez was the final first-round pick of the Bill Belichick era, and one of the best picks Belichick made in his last years with the organization. The youngster out of Oregon came to the Patriots looking like the prototypical modern cornerback. He has long arms, a lanky build and great straight-line speed. But Gonzalez’s rookie season ended after just four games when he underwent shoulder surgery.Gonzalez answered any questions about durability the following year when he was named a second-team All-Pro, one of the few New England players who actually exceeded expectations that season. In 2025, Gonzalez’s numbers weren’t as gaudy (he didn’t have an interception in the regular season), but that was largely because teams stopped throwing his direction. He was Pro Football Focus’ ninth-ranked cornerback (among those who played at least 600 snaps) and had the eighth-best coverage grade.Offseason recapGonzalez, who turns 24 on June 28, is ready to get paid. He skipped voluntary workouts and practices this spring. When he showed up to mandatory sessions, he said he wants to “get rewarded.”He and his camp have made it clear to the Patriots that he doesn’t want to partake in a whole lot of voluntary work until he gets the big extension for which he’s eligible. All of that sets up a fascinating negotiation. The Patriots are already paying wide receiver A.J. Brown near the top of the market. They’re paying defensive tackle Milton Williams near the top of the market. The assumption is that they’re soon going to pay quarterback Drake Maye at the top of the market. Are they willing to pay another player at the top of the market? To be clear, there’s been no indication so far that the Patriots aren’t. But if not, might they consider trading Gonzalez for a first-round pick (especially after giving one up in the trade for Brown)?X-factorThe assumption around the league is that the Patriots will get a deal done with Gonzalez before the season. But an interesting aspect of this negotiation is that Devon Witherspoon of the Seahawks, one of two corners drafted before Gonzalez in 2023, is also eligible for an extension. The two are close. They share an agency, and Gonzalez said they speak frequently. Both are looking for big-money extensions from their respective teams. Both have cases for becoming the highest-paid cornerback in the league. If Witherspoon gets an extension done with Seattle first, he could raise Gonzalez’s asking price (or vice versa). So it could behoove the Patriots to get a deal done with Gonzalez before Witherspoon does with the Seahawks. These star players like to reset the market and be the highest paid at their position, regardless of how briefly they may hold that title.Reasons for optimismWhere to start? Gonzalez has a body of work that shows he’s a top-end cornerback. Even his bad stretches are still quite good. And now the reputation is catching up with his play, and offensive coordinators and quarterbacks don’t look his way.He looks like a cornerback should look in 2026. And even at a time when so much in this league favors the offense, he’s capable of being the rare shutdown corner.Reasons for concernThe concerns are purely financial at this point. The worst-case scenario would be that the Patriots and Gonzalez are so far apart in contract talks that a deal never gets done, the talks cast a shadow over the season and Gonzalez doesn’t play as well as he has. Then, disgruntled and upset about the negotiations, he seeks a trade, and the Pats get pennies on the dollar in exchange because everyone knows he wants out. (This seems unlikely, though.)Also, if you really want to nitpick, you could look at Gonzalez’s injury history and note that he has played in just 34 of 51 possible regular-season games since entering the NFL. That said, he has been pretty healthy the last two seasons, except for a hamstring injury that kept him out of the first three games in 2025.What to watch in campThe dream scenario for the Patriots would be to wrap up negotiations with Gonzalez by the end of July and agree to a long-term extension before training camp. There’s certainly a chance that happens. But if it doesn’t, Gonzalez’s play and participation bear monitoring. He reported to mandatory minicamp last week, but he didn’t participate all that much. He did enough to avoid getting fined without being involved in intense 11-on-11 drills. Will that continue into training camp? The guess is Gonzalez wouldn’t do that while still two seasons from his five-year rookie contract expiring, but it’s worth following.Jun 18, 2026Connections: Sports EditionSpot the pattern.
