Ibrahima Konate has joined Real Madrid on a four-year contract following his exit from Liverpool. The France international, currently with his nation at the World Cup, was a free agent after not renewing his previous deal at Anfield. The 27-year-old is Madrid’s second signing of the summer following Bernardo Silva, who also arrived as a free agent following his departure from Manchester City. The club are targeting further signings, including Inter full-back Denzel Dumfries.Madrid have utilised the free-agent market frequently in recent years, with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kylian Mbappe, Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba among the players who joined the Spanish club following their deals expiring elsewhere.Alaba is among the players who have departed Madrid this summer, with Konate expected to compete with Rudiger, Dean Huijsen, Eder Militao and Raul Asencio for a starting spot in central defence.Konate joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig in 2021 after his £35million ($47.4m) release clause was activated. He became a regular starter in the heart of Liverpool’s defence alongside Virgil van Dijk and made 183 appearances for the club.Alongside Van Dijk, Liverpool’s existing centre-back options include Joe Gomez, who has missed 34 games over the last two seasons due to injury and Giovanni Leoni, whose debut campaign at Anfield ended prematurely in September after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. 20-year-old Jeremy Jacquet will join the club from Rennes for £55m plus £5m in add-ons in a deal that was agreed in this year’s winter window. Why have Madrid targeted Konate?Analysis by Real Madrid correspondent Guillermo RaiReal Madrid are strengthening a position that has recently been affected by the loss of David Alaba. Although the Austrian saw very little playing time, he was regarded as an experienced figure with significant influence in the dressing room, which made him an important presence within the squad. The team has also been hit by Eder Militao’s left hamstring injury, which is expected to keep the Brazilian sidelined for around four months.Given the circumstances, it makes sense for Madrid to move for Konate. The 27-year-old, brings valuable international experience from both Liverpool and France. He has over 100 Premier League appearances to his name and has been capped 27 times by the national team, featuring in five games at the 2022 World Cup.Last season’s form does raise some questions about the signing, but even so, he represents an attractive market opportunity given that he is available on a free transfer.Jun 18, 2026Connections: Sports EditionSpot the pattern.
