It’s make or break. Prince Harry, it seems, is finally bringing his wife and children back to the UK for a visit next month. If King Charles finds some excuse to avoid them, it’s game over. The rift will surely be permanent. Because, if there’s one thing that should melt hearts and build bridges between warring relatives, it is little, innocent children.

It’s been four years since Charles briefly saw his Californian grandchildren, Archie and Lilibet. They came for the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in the summer of 2022. Archie was just three, and Lilibet had her first birthday party in the garden of the Sussex’s home, Frogmore Cottage. That visit was the last time their grandpa saw them. And, of all the heartache this bitter rift has caused, to be deprived of your grandchildren must surely be the worst.

So what’s brought about this change from Harry? Last year, after losing his appeal over his security, he gave a furious interview in which he said he couldn’t see a world in which he would bring his wife and children back to the UK. He claimed the King wouldn’t speak to him because of the security issue. But, in the midst of his anger, he suddenly sounded a conciliatory note.
