Poland says talks are underway with the United States over the possible establishment of a permanent American military base on its territory, a step that would significantly strengthen NATO’s eastern flank, Deputy Defense Minister Cezary Tomczyk told The Associated Press following a government decision to advance the proposal.

Tomczyk described the cabinet resolution adopted on Tuesday as a formal invitation to Washington and said the American side had shown “interest,” particularly because the costs would be shared between both countries. However, he noted that the Pentagon has so far said it has “no news to announce” regarding any final decision.

Warsaw has been advocating for a long-term US military presence for years. Around 10,000 American troops are currently stationed in Poland, mostly on a rotational basis. Polish officials argue that ongoing adjustments to US force posture in Europe, including under review by the Trump administration, could open the door to a more permanent deployment of troops and equipment.

Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said Poland is “doing everything it can” to secure the arrangement, while emphasizing that the final decision rests entirely with Washington. He also noted that rotational deployments can, in some cases, evolve into permanent basing arrangements, which he described as preferable from Warsaw’s perspective.
