Sir, – I have to say I had a completely different experience from Alison Healy at a recent Paul Simon gig (“An Irishwoman’s Diary”, June 17th).The tickets were fairly priced, the venue was atmospheric, the audience were attentive to the musicians and respectful to each other. There were no conversations, no phones, no constant trips to the bar, necessitating further trips to the toilet. The whole audience, young and old, gave themselves over completely to a master songwriter and an immensely talented band. The standing ovation that followed the final encore of The Sound of Silence was a testament to the love and respect that was reciprocated between performer and audience. The different experience is down to the fact that, thanks to the lateral thinking of my wonderful wife, we attended the performance in the Grand Rex theatre in Paris for half the price of tickets in Dublin. It seems to me there is a link between the price people pay for a ticket and the sense of entitlement they have to behave boorishly.Musicians and music lovers deserve better. – Yours, etc,DARA HOGAN,Greystones,Co Wicklow.
