Days before thousands of medical aspirants are scheduled to appear for the NEET-UG re-examination on June 21, three students from Tamil Nadu, Delhi and Uttarakhand have allegedly died by suicide, with families and officials pointing towards the intense pressure surrounding the medical entrance exam. The incidents have renewed concerns about the mental stress faced by students preparing for highly competitive examinations.The deaths come after the controversy surrounding the NEET exam, including allegations of irregularities, led to the cancellation of the earlier test and announcement of a re-examination.Coimbatore student dies after emotional message to relativesA 19-year-old NEET aspirant from Coimbatore allegedly died by suicide on Wednesday after sending an emotional WhatsApp message to her relatives, expressing fear and distress over the cancelled examination.The student, identified as Anukeerthana from Park Town in Kovaipudur, was the elder daughter of Senthil Prabhu, who serves as the district secretary of the Tasmac trade union (CITU).Anukeerthana had completed Class XI from a private school in Ettimadai with good marks and wanted to become a doctor. She had joined a NEET coaching centre and was preparing seriously for the examination, hoping to secure admission to a medical college.According to relatives, the cancellation of the NEET exam and announcement of a fresh test left her deeply upset. She sent a message to her paternal uncle and other family members on Wednesday morning.In the message, she wrote: "I had taken the NEET exam and was waiting to join medical college, but the exam was cancelled. Now, I am afraid to take the test again. My father has spent a lot of money on me; I do not know how I can ever look him in the face again."After receiving the message, relatives rushed to her home. They found her unconscious after opening the door to her room. She was taken to a private hospital, where doctors tried to save her, but she died later in the afternoon.Her body was sent to the Government ESI Medical College Hospital for postmortem. The Kuniyamuthur police registered a case, took possession of her mobile phone and started an investigation.Delhi NEET aspirant found dead at homeA 19-year-old NEET aspirant identified as Renu allegedly died by suicide at her home in the Palam area of South-West Delhi.According to reports, Renu had appeared for the NEET examination on May 3 and was reportedly under stress after the exam was cancelled.Police said her father had gone to his in-laws’ home on June 13 following the death of his father-in-law. Renu was alone at home when the incident took place.A suicide note recovered from the spot reportedly showed her emotional distress. In the note, she apologised to her parents and expressed that she was unable to fulfil their expectations. The family originally belongs to Rajasthan.The incident has raised fresh questions about the emotional pressure faced by students preparing for entrance examinations, especially after the NEET controversy.Dehradun student leaves note for parentsA 23-year-old NEET aspirant identified as Ria allegedly died by suicide at her residence in the Chandrabani area of Dehradun on Tuesday.Officials said Ria had performed well academically, scoring 96.7% marks in Class 12 and later becoming a college topper. She was preparing for NEET and was reportedly under stress after the announcement of the re-examination.A suicide note recovered from the spot contained the words, "Mom and Dad, I love you," along with expressions of disappointment over not achieving success in studies.Speaking to ANI, Circle Officer (CO) Sadar Ankit Kandari said, "Yesterday morning, a tragic incident occurred. A report was received at the Patel Nagar police station that a 23-year-old girl named Ria committed suicide in Chandramani. In the investigation, it came to light that around 10:30 AM, when her mother was calling her for breakfast, she didn't open the door. Then her father was called, and when the door was opened, it was found that she had hanged herself."The officer said the investigation did not reveal any major behavioural changes before the incident."As far as the parents are concerned, they said the girl had gone to a 'Jagran' (religious vigil) with them that night. Since she used to study late at night, she woke up late in the morning. It was a normal routine; no disturbing facts emerged regarding changes in her routine or behaviour. She lived with her parents and siblings. As for the reason, she left a suicide note in which she wrote just four or five lines addressing 'I love you' and 'I'm sorry'. Besides this, after talking to her parents and neighbours, no such factor has come to light so far as to why she committed suicide," said CO.CO further stated that," Statements taken by the police from those around her, of which her parents are the most important, as she spent the most time with them, stated she was studying and preparing. But there wasn't any disturbing factor like her staying alone at home, being silent or withdrawn, or completely in depression. Her parents said there were no such extreme behavioural changes that could be identified as a reason for taking such a drastic step."Rajasthan aspirant dies before third NEET attemptEarlier this week, a 22-year-old NEET aspirant identified as Umesh Mali allegedly died by suicide in Rajasthan’s Sikar district. Umesh was preparing for his third attempt at NEET, which is scheduled to be held on June 21.According to police, Umesh was from Nawalgarh in Jhunjhunu district. His father works as a tile contractor in Mumbai. He was living in Sikar with his mother, elder sister and younger brother while preparing for the medical entrance exam.The incident was reported as another case highlighting the growing pressure among students appearing for competitive examinations.NTA assures students ahead of NEET re-examMeanwhile, National Testing Agency (NTA) Director General Abhishek Singh assured students that the NEET re-examination would be conducted in a secure and error-free manner.He also warned students and parents against fraudsters claiming to sell leaked papers through social media platforms.In a video message, Singh said there was “no leaked paper for the re-exam” and cautioned candidates against fake claims circulating on Telegram channels.He said the temporary suspension of the Telegram application till June 22 was aimed at preventing misinformation and misleading claims related to the examination.
