A 41-year-old man has been arrested by the Samoa police for allegedly shooting and damaging a public streetlight at Vaitele Fou, following a video of the incident circulating on social media.
Sape Olomotu, from Iva and Vaitele Fou, is seen getting out of a family van, then using a firearm to shoot at a public streetlight. Several people nearby can be seen witnessing the incident.
The Samoa Police, Prisons, and Corrections Services (SPPCS) reminded that all firearm license holders in Samoa are only for lawful purposes; any reckless or unlawful use will not be tolerated.
“Public infrastructure, such as streetlights, is meant for the safety and benefit of communities. Damaging them creates unnecessary costs for taxpayers and can also put public safety at risk,” the Samoa police said.
They also warned that firearms are not toys and must never be used to damage property, create social media content, or endanger others.
