The Diocese of Ibadan South of the Anglican Communion has raised concerns over the worsening security situation in the country, suggesting that the continued spate of kidnappings and violent attacks could indicate the involvement of influential sponsors within government circles or security agencies.
The position was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the third session of the ninth Synod of the Diocese held at All Saints Church, Idi-Ayunre, Ibadan.
The communiqué, made available on Wednesday, was signed by the Bishop of the Diocese, AkinTunde Popoola; the Clerical Synod Secretary, David Aina; and the Lay Synod Secretary, Toyin Akanmu.
Expressing concern over the nation’s security challenges, the Synod said it was becoming increasingly difficult to dismiss the possibility that some highly placed individuals were aiding criminal activities.
The communiqué read, “Synod decried the worrisome security situation in the country and noted that it is difficult to rule out the existence of top-ranking sponsors within the government or security agencies that are supposed to be fighting the menace since questions abound concerning the elusiveness of these oppressors who seem determined to frustrate the innocent with repeated cycles of kidnapping and increased violence, especially before major festivities and elections.”
