Whitby’s mayor is calling out what she says were racist, anti-Muslim and threatening remarks made about a picture posted online with her and a group of volunteers from a Muslim community organization.
Mayor Elizabeth Roy said a photo she shared on social media of her standing with a group of women from the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) Sisters Whitby, during a gathering over the weekend to mark Eid al-Adha that attracted hateful comments that the mayor found “deeply alarming.” The mayor said the majority of the remarks posted online were racist, anti-Muslim, demeaning and threatening.
