Bulgaria has indicated that it is opposing elements of the European Union’s 21st sanctions package against Russia, according to reporting by Politico citing two diplomatic sources. The package, presented by the European Commission on June 9, is currently under discussion among member states and is expected to be finalized by the end of July.
The proposed measures target multiple sectors, including energy, financial services, cryptocurrencies, and trade. Among the additional provisions under consideration is a ban on entry into the EU for Russian military personnel involved in the war against Ukraine.
European media also report that discussions have resurfaced over adding Russian Patriarch Kirill to the sanctions list due to his public support for the war. Previous attempts to sanction him in 2022 were blocked by Hungary.
Diplomatic reporting suggests Bulgaria’s objections relate to specific elements of the package rather than the overall framework. The position has drawn attention in Brussels, as negotiations continue over the scope of the new restrictions.
