The North City Corporation has completed 86% of its ongoing project to replace conventional street lights with energy-efficient LED lights across its jurisdiction. The corporation has also initiated steps to improve lighting in poorly illuminated areas through the installation of new street light poles and cable networks, according to a release.A total of 68,907 LED street lights have been installed so far under the project, which is being implemented through the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. The LED conversion work has largely been completed in Yelahanka, Byatarayanapura, Pulakeshinagar, Hebbal, Sarvagnanagar, five wards of Dasarahalli and three wards of Rajarajeshwari Nagar, with the remaining works currently under way.The civic body said the project also includes the installation of a Centralized Control and Monitoring System (CCMS) for remote monitoring and control of street lights. The installation of the monitoring system is still pending and is being taken up alongside the remaining LED conversion works.Until the LED street lighting project reaches its Commercial Operation Date (COD), maintenance of all street lights will continue to be handled by the contractor executing the project, Corporation Commissioner Pomalla Sunil Kumar said.The corporation has also prepared proposals to address dark spots identified through public complaints and inspections. The plans include the installation of additional street light poles, underground cables and Aerial Bunched (AB) cables to improve lighting and public safety.
