The prime reason behind the sudden increase in crime against women and children across Tamil Nadu is due to the uncontrolled availability of drugs across the State and Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, who is in-charge of Tamil Nadu police does not have any control over the police and policing, BJP State president Nainar Nagenthran has said.Speaking to reporters at Palayamkottai on Wednesday, Mr. Nainar Nagenthran said the drug abuse and availability of narcotic substances had been the prime reason behind the spurt in crime against women and children. Even the women police constables, including the recently launched ‘Singappenn’ special force, were not safe in this threatening situation prevailing across Tamil Nadu, he added.“Condemning this situation, the BJP is organising demonstration in Chennai on Thursday (June 18), in which the public will participate in large number,” Mr. Nagenthran said.On the alleged ‘horse trading” by the ruling Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam for getting majority and the resigning of AIADMK MLAs, Mr. Nagenthran said a comprehensive probe by the CBI should be ordered to ascertain the truth in this connection. On his recent meeting with BJP’s national president Nitin Nabin and Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi recently, Mr. Nagenthran said the party was only concentrating on taking the BJP to the next level in Tamil Nadu and denied rumours that discussion on the BJP’s pathetic performance came-up in the meeting. When asked if the BJP’s alliance with the AIADMK was still alive, he said it would be decided only during elections including the upcoming by-poll in the five Assembly segments that fell vacant after the resignation of AIADMK MLAs.On the reported enrolment of several lakhs of members in former State BJP president K. Annamalai’s ‘We, the Leaders’ movement, Mr. Nagenthran said: “Even I can claim that over 30 lakh members are behind me by manipulating the numbers.” Published - June 17, 2026 07:26 pm IST
