US President Donald Trump reportedly arrived late to a key G7 summit meeting on Wednesday before jokingly telling fellow leaders, "I'm the boss," a remark that drew laughter from those in attendance, according to The Mirror US.US President Donald Trump reacts during working lunch meeting of G7 members, partner countries, and artificial intelligence business leaders as part of the G7 summit, in Evian, eastern France, on June 17, 2026. (AFP)The moment came as leaders of the world's major industrialized democracies gathered to discuss a proposed agreement aimed at curbing Iran's nuclear ambitions, and reopening the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.According to The Mirror US, Trump joined the meeting after other leaders had already assembled. Upon arriving, the US president reportedly said, "I'm the boss," prompting laughter. The gathering included leaders from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States. Leaders from India, South Korea, Kenya and Brazil also participated in discussions during the summit. The final day of talks was held at a lakeside resort in the French Alps, where leaders focused on issues ranging from artificial intelligence and economic growth to global security concerns.G7 leaders endorse proposed Iran agreementA major focus of the discussions was a tentative agreement between the United States and Iran aimed at preventing Tehran from developing nuclear weapons while easing tensions in the region. In a declaration issued overnight, G7 leaders described the proposal as a "historic opportunity to prevent Iran from acquiring any nuclear weapon and tackling the threats related to its regional and ballistic activities."The statement added that member nations were "ready to contribute to its implementation." However, neither the White House nor Iranian officials had publicly released the full text of the agreement as of Wednesday.Trump defends deal amid criticismThe proposed accord is expected to be formally signed by US and Iranian officials later this week, according to The Mirror US.Addressing concerns about the agreement, Trump said: "Here's what it says: Iran will never have a nuclear weapon. It won't have one to buy, to develop, it will not have a nuclear weapon. And I would say that's about 99.9% of what I wanted."The US president is also facing skepticism from some members of his own party, who have questioned whether the agreement would permanently restrict Iran's nuclear program.Meanwhile, Israel has reportedly expressed concerns over ending the conflict under the current terms.Strait of Hormuz remains central issueAnother key objective of the agreement is reopening the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most critical energy shipping routes.According to the G7 declaration cited by The Mirror US, an international maritime mission led by France and the United Kingdom could help restore commercial traffic through the waterway by protecting merchant vessels, reassuring shipping operators and assisting efforts to verify the removal of naval mines. Before the conflict began on February 28, roughly one-fifth of the world's traded oil and natural gas passed through the Strait of Hormuz, making disruptions there a major concern for global energy markets.Beyond discussions on Iran, leaders also addressed concerns over artificial intelligence, economic growth and global trade imbalances.
