Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said the United States, including President Donald Trump, has adjusted its stance on the war in Ukraine, aligning more closely with what other G7 leaders view as a realistic assessment of the conflict. His remarks came during the G7 summit in Évian, France, and were reported by Reuters.
Carney noted that he had spoken with Trump multiple times over the past 36 hours, discussing a range of issues including trade and energy policy. He also mentioned conversations on Canadian restrictions regarding Chinese electric vehicles, adding that Trump reportedly expressed approval of their design.
Separately, the Canadian leader said Canada is expected to reach production levels of around 150 megatons of liquefied natural gas by the end of the year. He also outlined plans to conclude a trade agreement with India ahead of the G20 summit in November.
G7 leaders used the summit to reaffirm unity in support of Ukraine, emphasizing the protection of its territorial integrity and agreeing to intensify economic pressure on Russia. This includes expanding sanctions targeting key sectors of the Russian economy, particularly oil and gas.
“We will strengthen our sanctions, including those targeting the oil and gas sector,” the leaders said in a joint statement, underscoring coordinated efforts against Moscow.
