Proposed layout of the Zululand Energy Terminal. The marine facility is planned for Berth 207 in the Port of Richards Bay’s South Dunes precinct, a site identified in Transnet’s Port Development Framework Plan for a liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal incorporating a floating storage unit (FSU).

The development of South Africa’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal has received a major boost after the Zululand Energy Terminal (ZET) signed a Heads of Agreement (HoA) with ExxonMobil affiliate ExxonMobil South Africa LNG Ltd.

The agreement marks another milestone for the Richards Bay-based project and signals growing international interest in supplying LNG to South Africa as the country seeks to diversify its energy mix and address future gas shortages.

The proposed terminal at the Port of Richards Bay is expected to become a key gateway for imported LNG, enabling the import, storage, regasification and distribution of gas to industrial users and power generation facilities.

ZET director Oliver Naidu described the agreement as a significant endorsement of both the project and the future of LNG in South Africa.
