Stormers fullback Warrick Gelant will hope to dazzle against the Springboks on Saturday.
Former Outeniqua schoolmates Warrick Gelant and Duhan van der Merwe will reunite in the backline for a Barbarians side packed with 19 internationals from 11 different countries to face Springboks in Gqeberha.
Gelant, the Stormers fullback, faces a unique test against his fellow countrymen at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, lining up alongside Scotland and British & Irish Lions wing Van der Merwe in a dynamic back three completed by Wallabies wing Andrew Kellaway.
The famous invitational side will be captained by 89-cap All Black TJ Perenara at scrumhalf. Perenara, who first represented the Baa-Baas against Fiji in 2013, forms an exciting halfback pairing with Toulon and Argentina playmaker Tomás Albornoz, while Munster’s Alex Nankivell links up with French international Virimi Vakatawa in midfield.
There is immense size, power, and international experience upfront. Gloucester’s Argentinian loose-head Mayco Vivas, Dragons and Wales hooker Elliot Dee, and Edinburgh’s Scotland tight-head D’Arcy Rae anchor the front row. Western Force and Los Pumas lock Franco Molina combines with Bayonne’s Alex Moon in the second row.
