KANSAS CITY, MO — Algeria’s World Cup journey began against Argentina on Tuesday, starting goalkeeper Luca Zidane in the team’s opening match. The appearance marked Zidane's eighth international game for Les Fennecs.Zidane is the son of famed French international Zinedine Zidane, who helped Les Blues win their first World Cup in 1998.on home soil.The 28-year old represented France at the youth level, but he switched allegiances in 2025. Zidane is eligible to represent Algeria due to the birthplace of his grandparents. “We’ve lived in an Algerian culture since we were small,” Zidane told The Athletic. “It’s an honour to play for Algeria. The final decision was mine, but I spoke with my family, my parents, my brothers, my grandfather. My father was happy, he knew it was something I wanted to do. Zidane fractured his chin and jaw due to a collision when playing for club team Granada in April. He needed surgery and missed over a month of action. Before friendlies with the Algerian national team earlier this month, it was his first time on the field since April 26. Zidane kept a clean sheet against the Netherlands in the build-up to the World Cup. He made six saves as Algeria won 1-0 on June 3.After with the match against Argentina, Algeria will face Jordan and Austria in Group J.
