Thousands of Malawian nationals have sought refuge at Sherwood Hall grounds in Durban, sharing stories of fear, loss and uncertainty as tensions rise ahead of the June 30 deadline for undocumented foreign nationals to leave South Africa.

The POST reported that they fled their homes in Clare Estate during the night, leaving behind their belongings and livelihoods as concerns for their safety increased.

The Mercury previously reported on the growing number of foreign nationals seeking shelter at Sherwood Hall, with several Malawian residents saying they were forced to leave their homes after receiving threats.

Among those seeking assistance was 40-year-old Shaffe Raja, who arrived at the shelter with his two daughters, Grace, 6, and Brenda, 3.
