Opinion: The US president’s retreat on Iran is not only a betrayal of Israel, but of Iranians, Arab allies and America’s own standing; Netanyahu must make clear that Israel will not withdraw from vital positions in Gaza, Lebanon and SyriaBoaz Haetzni|It is now our turn to be betrayed by Trump. We took comfort in his friendship when he betrayed the Kurds in Syria, when he admired the murderer Julani and allowed him to slaughter Alawites, Kurds, Christians and Druze, who were saved only because of us. Even our intervention on their behalf was something he did not like.1 View gallery Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu (Photo: REUTERS/Evelyn Hockstein, Olivia Fitusi)He falls in love with every dictator: Erdogan, Putin, the Pakistanis, Sisi, who ignores his now-dead plan for the emigration of Gazans, and now the ayatollahs, just before their collapse. It is as if, on the eve of Nazi Germany’s fall, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt had signed an agreement with Hitler, left him in power, released his frozen funds, opened the path for his recovery and abandoned the Allies and Churchill. The 80-year-old child has lost interest in the toy and wants to skip ahead to an easier task. Perseverance, fighting evil, establishing America’s standing? That is hard, and it is not for him.The absurd statements, the zigzags like a drunk driver yanking the wheel sharply left and right, accelerating and braking nonstop, could only have been accepted if we knew he had a clear destination and that it was all part of sophisticated conduct leading to a defined goal. Once the bottom line is surrender, all that remains from the entire performance is madness. The surrender agreement saves the regime in Tehran and keeps it on its feet. It fills it with money, leads to the rehabilitation of its entire machinery of death in Iran itself and across the Middle East, and throws Israel to the dogs. This is not only a betrayal of Israel, but also of the Iranian public, which was slaughtered in the tens of thousands after taking to the streets, encouraged by the president’s call that “help is on the way.”It is also a betrayal of the Arab states that went with him, especially the United Arab Emirates. They sit close to the lion’s mouth and took a risk by joining the Israeli-American camp, despite knowing the long record of American betrayal. Now they may pay the price. There will be no more Abraham Accords, because Saudi Arabia and other countries are not crazy enough to gamble on the broken reed in Washington. As long as Obama and Biden were groveling before evil, America still had another option in its magazine: the conservative, national camp that supposedly knew the way. Now, with the collapse of the American wing that was supposed to repair the Democrats’ damage, America’s standing will suffer a landslide. The United States failed in a low-casualty war it had nearly won. Each of us can feel that personally, in our own contempt for the appeasement and pathetic weakness of a president who only moments ago seemed enormous, and now appears confused, weak, conciliatory and detached from reality.Worse still, it turns out that while the fighting was underway, there were already discussions about the terms of the Trump administration’s agreement with the Iranians through Pakistan and the Qatari devil. In other words, they understood that the blows they were absorbing were limited, and that the intention was to compromise rather than defeat them.It is entirely possible that this is what caused them to hold on. Just like Obama, who imposed sanctions on Iran while negotiating a nuclear agreement convenient for them, thereby encouraging them not to break.Boaz HaetzniAnd us? “And Jacob was left alone,” the Book of Genesis says, as Jacob stands before a physical struggle with a mysterious angel. We are alone, as usual. This is Netanyahu’s leadership test.On the one hand, the partnership with the United States is itself a force multiplier and a deterrent. An open rupture with the president could encourage enemies around us to see an opportunity. On the other hand, it is inconceivable not to respond both to the violation of the understandings reached about a week ago by Trump himself, under which Beirut would be treated the same as a strike on Israeli territory, and certainly not to withdraw from essential areas in Lebanon, thereby returning Radwan forces to the line facing our women and children.Insisting on this would make clear that the collapse is Trump’s alone and does not include us.In the end, withdrawing from or remaining in the new areas in the Gaza, Lebanon and Syria sectors is the difference between victory and defeat.
