G7 leaders call for safe and toll-free shipping in the Strait of Hormuz
Leaders who gathered at the G7 summit in France issued a joint statement overnight Tuesday on the agreement reached between Washington and Tehran with a focus on securing safe passage without tolls in the Persian Gulf.“We reaffirm that the right of transit passage without restrictions or tolls is the bedrock of international trade,” read the statement of leaders from Japan, France, the UK, Germany, Italy, the U.S. and Canada. In April, Iran had earlier floated such an idea as a way to fund reconstruction.The closure of the strait has driven up fuel and fertilizer prices worldwide and rattled the major industrial nations’ economies.The leaders’ statement also gave support to a French and British-led naval mission to the Persian Gulf to safeguard ships and remove mines from one of the crucial chokepoints in the world’s energy supply chain.
