The Cape Town Ulama Board (CTUB) has formally declared its solidarity with the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) and independent activists currently opposing a high-stakes legal application brought by retail group Cape Union Mart.
The statement from the Islamic judicial body comes as the matter continues before a full bench of The Western Cape High Court. Judges Judith Cloete, Roy Barendse, and Constance Nziweni are presiding over a scheduled three-day hearing.
In its statement, the board rejected Cape Union Mart's litigation, citing the application as a form of corporate intimidation intended to suppress civil society.
The organisation argued that public advocacy, the defence of human dignity, and the constitutional right to initiate consumer boycotts are essential components of South Africa's democratic framework that cannot be insulated from public accountability.
