Judge hands down maximum sentence for animal cruelty case.
In a major victory for animal welfare on Tuesday at the Wynberg Magistrate's Court, it was ruled that the maximum sentence available under the law was to be given to the two men convicted of brutally beating a cart horse in Rondebosch.
The judgment has been strongly welcomed by the Cape of Good Hope SPCA, which hailed the ruling as a definitive milestone in the fight against animal abuse in the Western Cape.
Taswell Solomons and Stanley Michaels appeared in court on Tuesday, June 3, facing charges of animal cruelty in contravention of the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962. The charges stemmed from a harrowing incident two years ago, when the duo repeatedly whipped a cart horse after it failed to move quickly enough through the Southern Suburbs.
SPCA spokesperson Belinda Abraham emphasized that the court’s decision marks a shifting tide in how the South African legal system views crimes against animals.
