Marie Dyer decided to put her four-year-old son in nursery so she could go back to work as a food technician at her local secondary school – but within a year, she decided to change careers.

Marie, 43, found her youngest son, Henry, was constantly getting sick at nursery and was even hospitalised after catching several infections at once.

It left him too unwell to attend nursery and meant Marie had to take a lot of unpaid time off work to look after him.

The mum-of-three was paying £600 a month to send her son to nursery twice a week, and soon found that much of the money was being wasted.

She faced the double whammy of paying for a nursery place she was not using, while also having to take unpaid time off.
