US President Donald Trump has invoked the Defense Production Act, citing “limited production capacity, fragile supply chains, long-lead dependencies, and related production bottlenecks.”
“I hereby find that conditions exist which may pose a direct threat to the national defense or its preparedness programs,” Trump said in a memo to the Pentagon.

The memo dated June 11, 2026, states that systemic constraints in the munitions industrial base may impair the ability of the US to “produce, sustain, and expand the availability of munitions, missiles, and equipment required for the national defense.”
The memo orders Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth to provide plans of action to mitigate the issue.
