Then came the US administration’s decision to impose tariffs on India as well other countries.Trump’s efforts to court Pakistan, which is said to have played a central role in Gulf war negotiations, further dampened US-India ties. This was further complicated by last week’s incidents in the Indian Ocean Region.India twice summoned US charge d'affaires Jason Meeks last week to register its protests following Indian casualties after American military attacks on vessels off the Gulf of Oman and handed over a demarche. Later external affairs minister S Jaishankar spoke with his American counterpart Marco Rubio to register the country’s protest. The US defended its actions.According to the US State Department, Rubio told Jaishankar that violations of the American blockade and the illicit transport of Iranian oil through the Strait of Hormuz “will not be tolerated” and insisted that commercial vessels must comply with instructions issued by US forces operating in the region. The attacks have sparked public anger in India.En route to Evian, Modi landed in Geneva, where he was received by Swiss President Guy Parmelin.According to external affairs ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, the two reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the India-Switzerland partnership.
