Highly regarded British teenager Hannah Klugman seized an unexpected second chance to claim her first WTA Tour win against compatriot Harriet Dart at the Nottingham Open. The 17-year-old has long been viewed as one of the country’s most exciting prospects, having won the prestigious Orange Bowl junior tournament in 2023 and reaching the girls’ final at the French Open last year. And, on the day she was given a Wimbledon main draw wild card for the second year in a row, Klugman again broke new ground. But her day had started at home - also in Wimbledon - after she lost in the final round of Nottingham qualifying on Sunday. The withdrawal of British No 2 and two-time former champion Katie Boulter due to injury gave Klugman a reprieve and route back into the draw as a lucky loser, and she seized her moment, defeating wildcard Dart 6-2 6-4.“I was at home this morning,” she said. “I obviously lost on Sunday, went back home and was first out (of the draw) so my coach was telling me we have to drive up at 5am this morning.“It’s been a long day for me. I’m so proud to get my first win today. It was tough to play another Brit, someone who I’ve watched when I was younger, but that’s pretty special as well.“Because I lost on Sunday, I thought I had to take this chance and I did that, I didn’t play with any fear.”Klugman saw off Dart in straight sets (Getty)Klugman made a flying start against an out-of-sorts Dart and the 29-year-old, who has also been given a Wimbledon wildcard, did not appear to relish taking on her young compatriot.Dart briefly seemed to have steadied in the middle of the second set and led 4-2 but Klugman, who served six aces, responded immediately with a run of four games in a row.Alicia Dudeney was another British player to be given a lucky loser spot – and a Wimbledon wildcard – but she was unable to take advantage, losing out 6-4 7-6 (2) to Dayana Yastremska, runner-up last year at the WTA 500 tournament.Klugman, who is the only home player to make the second round, will next face fourth seed Marie Bouzkova. Elsewhere defending champion McCartney Kessler lost in the first round against fellow American Katie Volynets. In the men’s event, which is part of the second-tier Challenger Tour, there were wins for British players Jacob Fearnley and Felix Gill.
