When Thomas Tuchel was appointed England manager nearly two years ago, he was given a clear brief to win the World Cup. Now that the Three Lions are in the USA for this summer’s tournament, though, delivering on that objective seems rather more difficult. As they prepare to face Croatia on Wednesday, England are among the favourites to lift the World Cup, to end a long 60-year wait for glory at a major tournament. Tuchel boasts one of the strongest squads at the tournament and this is reflected in their outright price of 7/1, placing them behind only France and Spain. And yet some of Tuchel’s squad selections have caused debate. By omitting Trent Alexander-Arnold, Phil Foden and Cole Palmer from his 26-man squad, the England manager has left a lot of creativity at home. Might that come back to haunt the Three Lions at some point?Of course, England still have plenty of options in all areas of the squad. Harry Kane is the 6/1 joint-favourite to win the Golden Boot and could spearhead another major tournament challenge for his national team, after arguably the best season of his career at club level for Bayern Munich.Bukayo Saka will be England’s starting winger on the right side, with the Premier League champion fresh from registering four goal contributions in his final five appearances of the season for Arsenal. As a source of verticality and as a one-on-one situation, Saka is crucial for the side.On the left wing, Tuchel faces a difficult choice between Anthony Gordon and Marcus Rashford. Gordon just joined Barcelona and Rashford enters the World Cup on the back of a campaign that saw the on-loan Manchester United winger register 13 goals and 10 assists for the Catalans in all competitions.

England have not won a trophy for 60 years but the betting odds suggest they have a strong chance of success at the World Cup.
