June 16 (UPI) -- A German man assembled 65,000 Lego bricks into the shape of a bratwurst and bun to break the Guinness World Record for the largest Lego brick sausage.

Tommy Schmidt, 45, said the idea for the unusual project came from sausage producer Die Thüringer.

"I have always enjoyed taking on unusual challenges. When the meat and sausage producer Die Thüringer from my region approached me with the idea of building something out of LEGO, we started developing the concept together. It quickly became clear to us that it had to be something big," he told the record-keeping organization.

He said the record attempt paid tribute to his home region.
