Sara Cox takes over on the Radio 2 breakfast show from July 6.17:11, 16 Jun 2026BBC Radio 2 newsreader Tina Daheley has quit the Breakfast Show after a seven-year stint, following the sacking of former presenter Scott Mills. But travel presenter Ellie Brennan, who is also a close pal of Mills having joined the show when he took over from Zoe Ball in January 2025, is to stay.‌Tina, 45, began reading news in the early bird slot back when Zoe replaced Chris Evans as host in 2019. She stayed with the Radio 2 show after Mills, who was fired in March amid allegations of serious sexual offences involving an underage boy, took over last year.‌Sharing the news on Instagram just one day after Sara announced the 6 July date for her first breakfast show, Daheley said she was leaving to escape the “early alarm calls”.‌And speaking on the programme yesterday, temporary presenter Gary Davies said he was also looking forward to a break. “From 6 July you and I get some sleep,” he told Tina. “And Sara is going to be absolutely brilliant on this show.”Asking if Ellie was “sticking around”, she replied: “My alarm stays on. So very exciting. I’ll be joining Sara in a few weeks’ time. Can’t wait.”‌Tina’s decision to exit comes after 14 years of getting up at the crack of dawn, and she will be replaced by fellow earlybird news presenter Matt Carter. “It’s been one of the greatest privileges of my life to wake up with you every morning, and humbling to have been trusted to deliver the news on the biggest breakfast show in Europe,” she wrote in her post.“After 18 years and six back-to-back breakfast shows (probably a record in there somewhere), I’m looking forward to a lie-in.” And she added: “Wishing Sara and her team the very best of luck. I’ll be tuning in while doing the school run.”‌The presenter will not leave BBC Radio 2 altogether and also has some TV work coming up. “You’ll hear me between 12-2pm when Jeremy [Vine]’s away, and you’ll see me on BBC One after the summer,” she added.Earlier this year Sara auditioned to be a Strictly Come Dancing presenter but said her heart wasn’t in it because she’d already landed her “dream job” of hosting the Radio 2 breakfast show.Insiders said the 51-year-old would move across solo, with the rest of her team staying in the teatime slot. There is no news yet who will become the permanent presenter of Drive, with Mark Goodier, Ellie Taylor and Alex Jones currently booked as cover. Gary Davies is also expected to be a stand-in until the new host starts.Article continues belowLike this story?
