Thanjavur District Collector R. Revathi on Tuesday instructed officials to firm up proposals for work to be executed in Kumbakonam ahead of the 2028 mahamaham festival.Chairing a coordination meeting with officials of government departments and agencies in Kumbakonam, Ms. Revathi discussed work that need to be implemented in the town, including laying underground electricity cables and improving basic amenities, besides removal of encroachments around the mahamaham tank. She called for status reports on the progress of work on the widening of the Kumbakonam-Mannargudi, Kumbakonam-Sirkazhi and Kumbakonam-Karaikal roads, and the Vikravandi-Thanjavur highway. She instructed the officials to prepare estimates for the Darasuram-Kudavasal bypass.She directed the officials to prepare estimates for construction of an overbridge to link the outpatient, inpatient, and emergency wards of the Kumbakonam Government Hospital to prevent people from randomly crossing the road.She instructed the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation to operate about 2,700 special buses and Transport department to establish a temporary bus stand in the town. She suggested introducing bus rides at a fare of ₹7 for travelling anywhere within the town for a distance of about four km. Additional minibuses should be operated.She instructed the police department to install barricades to regulate pedestrian movement without congestion.
