Air India on Tuesday announced a new 'Basic' fare category for Economy Class passengers on select domestic routes, offering a lower-cost travel option with fewer bundled services.The fare, currently being rolled out on a pilot basis, includes a 15 kg checked baggage allowance, 7 kg cabin baggage allowance and complimentary tea or coffee. Unlike the airline's existing fare categories, complimentary meals are not included.The Tata Group-owned carrier said the new fare is aimed at price-conscious travellers who prefer to pay only for services they need. Passengers booking the Basic fare can pre-purchase meals up to 24 hours before departure, with options including vegetarian, non-vegetarian, Jain and diabetic meals.The Basic fare expands Air India's existing fare families — Value, Classic and Flex — which were introduced in 2024 and continue to include complimentary meals and other bundled benefits.According to the airline, the fare is currently available only through its direct booking channels, including its website, mobile app, contact centre and airport ticketing offices.Air India said it will assess customer response during the trial phase before deciding on the future expansion of the offering.
