The financial benefit of ₹2,000 under the Gruhalakshmi scheme has been credited to the accounts of 9,247 dead people in Shivamogga district, C.S. Chandra Bhoopal, president of the Guarantee Schemes Implementation Authority of Shivamogga district, on Tuesday.During a meeting to review the progress of the State government’s guarantee schemes, Mr. Bhoopal flagged the issue of benefits being diverted to ineligible beneficiaries. In some cases, multiple family members were receiving the benefit in violation of norms.“There are instances of taxpayers getting the benefit of the Gruhalakshmi scheme. As many as 5,618 ineligible people are receiving the benefit, causing a huge loss to the State exchequer. Strict measures are necessary to remove such names from the beneficiary list,” he said.Mr. Bhoopal pointed out that the misuse of the Gruhajyothi scheme, under which consumers receive free electricity up to 200 units per month. “The benefit is being used for commercial establishments. All such connections need to be scrutinised to prevent misuse,” he said.Mr. Bhoopal welcomed the government’s decision to ask beneficiaries to submit fresh applications. “The government will not stop the guarantee schemes. However, measures are being taken to ensure genuine, eligible people get the benefits,” he said.Guarantee Implementation Authority vice-president Shivanna and district officials attended the meeting.
