Protests have erupted in Tirana over a proposed $4.6 billion (£3.43 billion) luxury resort linked to Donald Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner.Around 200,000 people descended on the streets of the Albanian capital in opposition to the development, also demanding that Albania's Prime Minister Edi Rama step down from office. The protests were sparked by the controversial tourism development, a project from the Kushner family. The resort, located in the Vjosa-Narta wetland, is known for its flamingo population, and conservationists have warned the development could damage the environment. Prime Minister Rama warned that the country is experiencing a rise in cancellations from foreign tourists. He said: 'The direct consequence (of the protests) is the cancellation of reservations by foreign tourists.' Protesters gathered along the main boulevard outside the Prime Minister's Office in Tirana, Albania, yesterday Albanian protesters shared their discontent regarding the new constructionHe added that local businesses - which depend on tourism, especially in the summer months - have voiced concerns to him as a result. He warned protesters: 'This is fascist, it is scandalous, and it must be stopped.' The government has, however, said that the new luxury development - in the Vjosa-Narta Protected Area in Zvernec - will improve tourism.Albania's Prime Minister has denied suggestions that the Trump-backed project will spoil one of the most important coastal habitats in the Adriatic. The resort comes from Ivanka Trump, 44, and her husband Jared Kushner, 45, who also want to build luxurious eco-homes and hotels on the remote Sazan Island just off Albania's picturesque Adriatic coast.President Donald Trump's daughter and son-in-law believe rich tourists will flock to the Communist-era outcrop, which was previously a secretive Soviet military base riddled with thousands of buried bunkers and underground tunnels, to enjoy its pristine beaches and abundant wildlife. But critics are furious with the Albanian government for letting the powerful Americans turn the unspoiled setting in the Adriatic – an arm of the Mediterranean Sea – into a secluded playground for the super wealthy.'It's also a matter of national pride. It's the only island we have. The authorities are just giving it away to the highest bidder,' leading Albanian ecologist Joni Vorpsi told the Daily Mail.Kushner's Affinity Partners investment firm has been given the green light to develop resorts on Sazan Island and the nearby Zvernec Peninsula, an untouched coastal wetland that's home to flamingos, seals and nesting sea turtles. It marked the 16th consecutive day of demonstrations against a proposed luxury tourism development project linked to Jared Kushner Another protester took part in a rally against a massive coastal development earlier in June Protesters held placards against the Albanian government during the protestIvanka hailed the project as 'incredible' and 'massive in scale' in an interview with podcaster David Senra published at the end of May.'It's an unbelievable, beautiful, 1,400-hectare (3,500 acre) private island in the middle of the Mediterranean,' she said.'We were on a friend's boat and we stopped for a swim. Effectively, that's how we found it.'We swam to the island, we went on a hike, barefoot all the way up to the top, and we were just captivated, and it stayed with us ever since.'Over the course of many years, we developed the opportunity to help realize its potential and transform it, but with a lot of restraint and care because the land is so beautiful.'
