NEW YORK: Saudi Arabia, on behalf of the Arab Group, reaffirmed support for the UN and its role in promoting peace, security and sustainable development during the hearing of secretary-general candidate Maria Fernanda Espinosa.

Abdulaziz Al-Wasil, the Kingdom’s permanent representative to the UN, expressed the Arab Group’s commitment to working with the next secretary-general to strengthen the organization’s effectiveness and uphold its principles.

The statement highlighted key issues, including respect for international law and strengthening the UN’s support for the Palestinian cause and relevant international resolutions.

It also called for continued backing of UN bodies, including the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East.

The statement highlighted the need to address the UN’s financial challenges, increase support for developing countries and accelerate progress toward the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
