Monday delivered the first shock of the World Cup, with pre-tournament favorite Spain being held to a draw against Cape Verde. France and Argentina both make their tournament debuts on Tuesday. Will we see another surprise, or will the powerhouses take care of business? Here’s a look at the odds and storylines ahead of Tuesday’s four matches before our betting staff makes picks.France vs. Senegal (Group I)Time: 3 p.m. ETTV: Fox (English), Telemundo (Spanish)Venue: MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, N.J.Spain’s surprise draw against Cape Verde shifted the odds a touch and made France the tournament favorite. The French have arguably the most talented team on paper with world-class players all over the squad.Les Bleus, which won in 2018 and lost the final in 2022, have a chance to become the third team to make it to three straight World Cup finals. West Germany (runner-up in 1982 and 1986, winner in 1990) and Brazil (winner in 1994 and 2002, runner-up in 1998) are the other two.Kylian Mbappé, co-favorite to win Golden Boot with England’s Harry Kane, was the top scorer four years ago with eight goals. Senegal isn’t a pushover team to run up his goal tally against, but France is solidly favored to win.Stylistically, both teams are built to attack, although Group I could make them a bit more conservative. There aren’t any classic “groups of death” in the 48-team field, but this one is pretty close. France is the top-ranked team in the world, Senegal is the sort-of-but-not-technically African champions and Norway is a trendy pick led by Erling Haaland. Senegal, in particular, is motivated to play for a draw here or against Norway, and then try to beat Iraq to get out of the group.Iraq vs. Norway (Group I)Time: 6 p.m. ETTV: Fox (English), Telemundo (Spanish)Venue: Gillette Stadium, Foxborough, Mass.Haaland gets his World Cup debut and does so in a match that Norway is heavily favored to win. The Manchester City star, who is widely regarded as the best striker on the planet right now, led qualifying across all confederations with 16 goals.Norway blew through its UEFA group with a perfect record, including two wins against Italy, and a ridiculous plus-32 goal differential. This performance, combined with Haaland and Arsenal midfielder Martin Ødegaard, has made Norway such a popular darkhorse pick that it’s hard to even call the Scandinavian country a darkhorse at this point. Now, it’s time to deliver on the sudden expectations that have put Norway among the top 10 favorites in the odds to win the tournament. In a day when Argentina and France take the field, Norway is actually the biggest favorite of the day.Iraq is making its second World Cup appearance. The other occasion was in 1986, when the team lost all three matches in Mexico.Argentina vs. Algeria (Group J)Time: 9 p.m. ETTV: Fox (English), Telemundo (Spanish)Venue: Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City, Mo.The big question for Argentina is what Lionel Messi will look like. Messi turns 39 in eight days. He’s still torching Major League Soccer, but that’s not the same level as the World Cup.After the triumph in Qatar in 2022, will Argentina have lost the fire it had to get its iconic star a World Cup trophy, or will he and the team play with less pressure knowing their legacies are secure no matter what happens? While La Albiceleste are heavily favored in this match, on paper it bears some resemblance to their opener in Qatar when Saudi Arabia won 2-1 in a total shocker. Most fans will recognize Algeria winger Riyad Mahrez from his Leicester City and Manchester City exploits. The 35-year-old is one of three holdovers from Algeria’s last World Cup appearance in 2014.Austria vs. Jordan (Group J)Time: Midnight ETTV: FS1 (English), Telemundo (Spanish)Venue: Levi’s Stadium, Santa Clara, Calif.More World Cup after dark from California. This late start with these teams could easily get forgotten among the slew of matches during the group stage. This match doesn’t have big-name teams like the other three, but it does involve a debutante. Jordan has been on the upswing in the last few years. Al-Nashama, which translates to The Chivalrous Ones, made it to the Asian Cup final for the first time in 2023 before making it through qualifying.Captain Musa Al-Taamari plays for Lille in the French Ligue 1, but most of the squad plays its club play in the Middle East.Austria, making its first World Cup since 1998, is a bigger favorite than both France and Argentina.Best betsMike Hume: Erling Haaland to score 2+ goals, +190 (DraftKings)Haaland isn’t so much a goal scorer as he is a goal machine. And the machine should be busy in Norway’s opener against Iraq. I don’t expect the track meet we saw in Germany’s rout of Curaçao, but Haaland should have ample opportunity to score, and he doesn’t need many chances to find the back of the net.Dan Santaromita: Martin Ødegaard assist, +200 (DraftKings)I’m sort of following Mike’s pick a bit here, but I do think Norway wins against Iraq easily, and I like the chances of Ødegaard getting an assist from a corner or setting up Haaland. Norway is motivated to boost its goal differential with tougher games ahead in Group I, and Ødegaard is the engine.Dean Jones: France-Senegal draw, +350 (DraftKings)France are rightly one of the favorites to win this tournament and, as a result, people will be expecting them to get off to a winning start. The problem is that tournaments do not always begin in such fashion… as Spain learned against Cape Verde. Senegal are certainly going to have to be at their best to get something from this game, but they should be able to match the French athletically, while they also have some very technical players that have the ability to define the game.We are in for an entertaining game, and it would not be totally surprising if France fail to get a win on the board.Vik Chokshi: Alexander Sørloth anytime goalscorer, +130 (DraftKings)I’m riding the Norway train here with Mike and Dan. I like them to win this match easily, but don’t want to pony up the juice on Norway to win or Haaland to score. Instead, I like that I’m getting plus money on a stud player against a weak team. Sørloth has size and is great in the box. With all the attention on Haaland, I anticipate him getting some great opportunities to score.Betting recordsUnitsRecordMike2.633-2Dan0.753-2Vik-0.153-2Dean-0.352-3
