Social Democratic leader Mindaugas Sinkevičius announced on Tuesday his decision to lead a new government being formed after a ruling coalition was established.
"I wish to inform you that I confirm my determination to take responsibility for the formation of the new government and to serve as prime minister," Sinkevičius said on social media, adding that the country needed unity.
He will replace Inga Ruginienė, who has led the government since last autumn after Gintautas Paluckas' resignation amid a graft probe.Sinkevičius was elected chairman of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party in May.
He said the government will primarily focus on reducing the burden of rising prices and living costs, addressing social inequality and poverty, fostering economic growth, improving job quality and ensuring healthcare accessibility.
In the announcement, Sinkevicius also stressed the need to strengthen defence and said the country’s foreign policy “must be active, consistent and results-oriented”.
