A new trailer for Leviticus has offered us an unsettling new look at writer-director Adrian Chiarella’s feature debut, a supernatural horror film that has already generated buzz following its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. The Australian production centres on teenagers Naim and Ryan, whose budding romance is interrupted by a terrifying force that manifests as the person its victim desires most. As the two struggle to survive, the supernatural threat becomes deeply intertwined with questions of identity, love, and fear.Joe Bird, best known for Talk to Me, stars as Naim, while Stacy Clausen plays Ryan. The cast also includes Mia Wasikowska as Naim’s mother Arlene, with the actor additionally serving as an executive producer on the film. The film first debuted in Sundance’s Midnight section on January 23, where it was showcased alongside other genre titles. It is scheduled to open in Australian theatres on June 18, with international releases expected to follow.Chiarella has described the project as a form of “queer social horror,” drawing inspiration from personal experiences and stories of conversion practices directed at queer individuals.Influenced by genre classics and modern horror cinema, Leviticus has been compared to films such as It Follows and The Witch for its blend of psychological tension and supernatural dread.Produced by Causeway Films and supported by Screen Australia and VicScreen, a wider theatrical rollout for Leviticus is yet to be announced.
