Britain has announced a new package of support for Ukraine that combines energy assistance with additional economic pressure on Russia, as leaders gather for the G7 summit in France.
Ahead of the meeting in Evian-les-Bains, Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the United Kingdom would provide enriched uranium fuel for Ukraine’s nuclear power sector while simultaneously expanding sanctions aimed at weakening Moscow’s ability to finance its war effort.
The energy agreement, valued at £210 million, will allow nuclear fuel supplier Urenco to provide fuel to Ukraine’s state nuclear operator Energoatom for the next two years. British officials said the arrangement is intended to strengthen Ukraine’s energy security at a time when the country continues to face repeated attacks on critical infrastructure.
Starmer said London was “stepping up” its support for Kyiv by helping secure reliable energy supplies while also targeting financial channels linked to the Kremlin.
The latest sanctions package focuses on Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet” and networks used to bypass existing international restrictions. British authorities believe these mechanisms have played an important role in sustaining Russian revenues despite extensive Western sanctions.
