South African premiere run of Something Rotten! will take place at the Artscape.

The Waterfront Theatre School is set to debut the South African premiere of the Tony Award-nominated musical comedy Something Rotten! at the Artscape Arena. The production is scheduled to run from July 10 to July 18, with a special VIP Gala performance taking place on Saturday, July 11, at 17h00 for 17h30.

Described as a "gloriously cheeky, tap-dancing, jazz-handed love letter to theatre," the musical asks what happens when William Shakespeare's competition becomes desperate enough to invent the musical genre.

The show features a creative team including director Paul Griffiths, choreographer Ursula Lubbe, and musical director Thinus Viljoen.“Something Rotten! is a joyous celebration of theatre itself. It reminds us of the power of imagination, collaboration, and storytelling to bring people together,” says director Paul Griffiths.

While the production promises "chaos, spectacle, and a lot of rhyming couplets," Griffiths says that the show tackles significant personal themes. “However beneath the laughter, the spectacle and the wonderfully irreverent humour, there lies a deceptively simple question: what happens when we spend so much time trying to be someone else that we forget who we are?”
