“Household voting” sounds like an innocent poll a family might conduct when deciding on a destination for the summer holidays or what to have for dinner. But in reality, it represents something much darker.

It is the belief that every US household should only get to cast a single vote in an election – and that the honour should fall to the male head of the family.

It is, essentially, the belief that women should not be able to vote. Is it bizarrely regressive, Handmaid’s Tale stuff? Definitely. Fringe? Unfortunately, not.
