U.S. President Donald Trump warned France of the risks of a new trade war and threatened to impose 100% tariffs on French wines and champagne if Paris does not repeal the digital tax on American technology companies.

According to Ukrinform, the American leader made this statement in an interview with the New York Post (NYP).

“I asked him not to charge American companies, and if they do, I have no choice but to charge a 100% tariff on all champagnes and all wines coming out of France,” Trump said.

The U.S. president stated that he told Macron this directly, demanding that he repeal the 3% tax on American tech companies, which has been in effect in France since 2019 and taxes the local revenue of giants such as Google’s parent company, Alphabet, the world’s largest e-commerce marketplace, Amazon, and Apple.

“All [Macron] has to do is get rid of the sales tax, and he wouldn’t have that kind of pressure,” the American leader claimed.
