From the spring of 2027, children in Britain under the age of sixteen will be banned from at least ten social media platforms including TikTok, Snapchat and YouTube.
The prime minister said he was prepared to have a fight with technology companies to keep young people safe online. More than 100,000 people responded to a government consultation about the proposal, with nine in 10 parents backing a ban.
But critics warn the plans could fail in practice, with Australia’s existing restrictions widely flouted.
