Actor-turned-politician, Kenneth Okonkwo, has withdrawn his support for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar's 2027 presidential ambition, citing what he described as the continued marginalisation of Nigeria’s South-East region.
This followed reports that former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi has been chosen as the vice-presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Okonkwo, a former spokesman for the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council during the 2023 elections, announced his position in a statement posted on his X account on Monday shortly after reports emerged that Amaechi, a former governor of Rivers State, had been selected as Atiku’s running mate ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The development marks a significant setback for the opposition coalition seeking to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s administration in the next general election, as Okonkwo had been one of the prominent voices supporting efforts to build a broad-based alliance against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
