McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, was also found guilty of allowing the death of a child, two counts of child cruelty, and one count of the sexual assault of a child. Preston, who was taken from his birth mother by Oldham Council, was adopted by Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley in April 2023 when he was nine months old. During the just under four months Preston was in their care, he suffered routine ill-treatment, sexual abuse and physical assault, sustaining 40 traumatic injuries, with Varley also taking and distributing indecent images and videos of the child. Following an an eight-week trial at Preston Crown Court, the jury delivered 29 guilty verdicts in total, with both defendants due to be sentenced on Thursday.
